BEWARE OF MARKETING

I’m not against marketing. It always exciting to find a new product that somehow fits into your life. I like to Mt. bike and a few months ago I received an ad on Facebook about the Bicio GoRide iPhone mount for my bike. I’mone of those guys who only exercises to generate data that I can later upload and view in graphs and speadsheets. I bought the Bicio and have now tracked a bunch of my rides with the Motion GPSiphone app. I can see a map of my ride, my distance traveled, total feet climbed, etc; it’s cool. Furthermore, I can email my rides to my bike buddies, then they can upload those files into their phones and use the app to navigate the same ride I did. Cool, right? Advertisment WIN! Heard of a product, bought it, use it, got what I paid for, love it.

Now, jumping stories, I reflect on my trip to the natural product expo in Anaheim earlier this month. As I alluded to in an earlier post, some products were really innovative and exciting (I have a few of those products listed in the Favorite Pages section of the Dan’sPlan fan page). Other products were clearly misappropriating meaningful terms, like ‘organic’, as marketing ploys. In other words, some of these companies were using these terms innapproriately to sell products, as their products were really not representing the spirit of the terms boldly listed on the front of their packaging.

The story reminds that being a vigilant shopper is important. If something is important to you, you want to know that you’re getting what you’re paying for. Part of this equation is defining what is important to you in the first place ( that is one major objective for all the customers of Dan’sPlan ), then identifying brands that you trust and love.

Finding out about new cool products can be great, it’s just nice to know that you’re getting what you paid for.

At Dan’sPlan, transparency rules!

LET’S GET IT STARTED…

organic potting soil - $5
organic seeds - $5
reused egg cartons - $0
fresh cilantro, peppers, and basil - priceless

Seriously folks, one thing I love is fresh herbs on my food and this is the time of year to get your herb garden started. It’s pretty easy - get a couple of containers like the egg cartons I’ve used, throw some dirt in them, plant the seeds like it says on the back of the packages, and then put the containers on a sunny windowsill and water regularly. It was nice out today, so I gave the seedlings a little introduction to the great outdoors and took the picture below.

This is pretty easy to do, inexpensive, and ultimately, delicious. So get your “starts” going folks!
