The link below points to an interesting TED talk by Gary Wolf on technologies that allow us to measure and track our personal data (e.g., myzeo, fitbit, etc.). This is interesting to me as a scientist because I know, for example, that our perceptions of our behaviors and abilities are often skewed or biased…. This is perhaps best exemplified by survey data that show that way more than half of the population believe that they are above average in intelligence and other abilities when in fact by definition, half of the population has to be below average (below the median actually, but now we’re splitting statistical hairs). Because our perceptions are subject to distortion, it is interesting and useful to have devices that can objectively measure our activities and biological data. So what do you think Dan’s Planners? Are these technologies useful for evaluating and changing our behaviors? Any recommendations on devices such as these that have helped you achieve your goals?
